1968 Cadillac Deville Convertible
Stacked dual headlights appeared for the final time on Cadillac’s open-air flagship, giving way to horizontal arrangements the following year.
The extended hood stretched 8.5 inches longer than 1967 models to accommodate recessed windshield wipers, while a raked deck lid and refined mesh grille insert modernized the 224.7-inch body. Riding a 129.5-inch wheelbase, the convertible weighed approximately 4,600 pounds.
A new 472 cubic inch V-8 replaced the previous 429, delivering 375 horsepower through a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and Turbo-Hydramatic three-speed automatic transmission. This powerplant remained Cadillac’s standard engine through the mid-1970s before evolving into the 500 cubic inch variant. Optional front disc brakes debuted for 1968.
Interior appointments included a power-operated top, standard power windows and front seat adjustment, with power door locks and automatic climate control available as options.
Priced around $5,740, the DeVille convertible accounted for 18,025 units among Cadillac’s approximately 230,000-vehicle production total, marking the brand’s seventh consecutive year of record sales.
