1934 Peugeot 601 Roadster
Art Deco styling defined Peugeot’s flagship model during its brief 18-month production run from 1934 to 1935.
The 601 was closely based on the manufacturer’s recently updated 201 and 301 models, but the longer six-cylinder engine of the 601 required an extended wheelbase, resulting in more elegant proportions than its four-cylinder siblings.
The roadster featured sweeping front fenders, a rear-mounted spare wheel, and the absence of running boards, all of which emphasized its sporting character.
The two-seater 601 Roadster, a frequent prize winner at concours d’élégance events, proved exceptionally rare, with only 109 examples built and an estimated 20 surviving today.
Power came from a 2,148cc inline six-cylinder engine producing 59 horsepower at 3,500 rpm, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Like other Peugeots of the era, the 601 was equipped with independent front suspension and hydraulic four-wheel drum brakes.
The 601 received a minor facelift for the 1935 model year, announced during the summer of 1934, just months after the car’s launch (the most visible change was the lowering of the headlights).
