Few European coupes of the early 1970s could match the 3.0 CS on both road and track. The Karmann-built bodywork, styled with input from Bertone, gave the E9 a clean, long-hood profile that has aged particularly well. Four-wheel disc brakes replaced the previous disc/drum setup when the 3.0-liter cars arrived in 1971.

The 2,986cc SOHC inline-six, fed by dual Weber carburetors, produced 172bhp at 5,800rpm and was good for 131mph with a 0-60 time of around 8 seconds. Power went through a 4-speed manual gearbox.

On the competition side, the E9 platform took the European Touring Car Championship six times, with class victories at Le Mans, Spa, and Daytona.
