1969 Ford Mustang

Born from Ford’s NASCAR ambitions and Henry Ford II’s determination to take on Chrysler’s dominating Hemi, the 1969 Boss 429 Mustang stands as one of America’s most exclusive factory performance machines.

With only 859 examples produced in 1969, the Boss 429 required such extensive modifications that Ford contracted Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan, to complete the transformation. Each body-in-white Mustang arrived at Kar Kraft, where the standard 428 Cobra Jet engine (installed only for factory handling purposes) was removed and replaced with the race-bred 429 “semi-hemi” powerplant.

The massive 7.0-liter V8 featured aluminum cylinder heads with Ford’s unique “crescent” combustion chambers, four-bolt mains, forged internals, and a 735-cfm Holley carburetor. While Ford conservatively rated output at 375 horsepower for insurance purposes, actual performance often exceeded this figure, with some sources suggesting up to 425 horsepower in stock form.

Accommodating this engine required relocating the shock towers, extending the inner fenders, moving the battery to the trunk, and repositioning suspension mounting points.

Available in just five colors with mandatory black interiors for 1969, all Boss 429s came equipped with four-speed manual transmissions and distinctive enlarged hood scoops. The earliest 50 examples, and those with “S-code” engines featuring NASCAR-spec internals, remain the most coveted among collectors.
