1928 Lancia Lambda 8th-Series Grande Luxe Saloon

Revolutionary engineering defined this Italian automobile that pioneered technologies decades ahead of its time. The Lambda featured the world’s first load-bearing unitary body construction and independent front suspension using sliding pillars with coil springs, innovations that would not become commonplace until much later.

Built on an 11-foot-3-inch wheelbase chassis, this example carried Weymann-type coachwork, possibly supplied through Curtis Automobile Coachbuilders of London.

The 8th Series introduced an enlarged 2,570cc narrow-angle aluminum V4 engine with a single overhead camshaft, producing about 69 horsepower and enabling a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h).

A four-speed manual gearbox replaced earlier three-speed units, while four-wheel drum brakes and hydraulic dampers completed the advanced specification.

Production of the 8th Series totaled 3,903 cars between 1928 and 1930, representing the penultimate and most successful iteration of the approximately 11,200 Lambdas built overall.
