1959 Fiat-Abarth 750 GT ‘Double Bubble’ (by Zagato)

Competition success at the 1957 Mille Miglia delivered instant credibility when multiple examples finished at the top of the 750cc class, firmly establishing Carlo Abarth’s growing “giant killer” reputation. This performance validated the collaboration between Turin’s master tuner and Milan coachbuilder Zagato.

Built from 1956 through 1960, approximately 400 to 450 examples proved equally successful at Sebring, Le Mans, and countless SCCA events across North America.

Engineering focused on extracting maximum performance from minimal displacement. Abarth’s modified 747cc engine (derived from the Fiat 600’s original 633cc unit) produced up to approximately 47 horsepower at around 6,000 rpm through high-compression heads, revised camshafts, and purpose-built exhaust systems.

Various specifications ranged from roughly 44-horsepower Gran Turismo tune to higher-output Sprint preparation, with rare twin-cam variants pushing output further.

Elio Zagato’s aluminum-alloy bodywork saved roughly 130 pounds compared to the standard Fiat 600, bringing competition weight to around 1,180 pounds (535 kg).

The distinctive twin roof bulges (necessitated by helmet clearance while maintaining aerodynamic efficiency) became the model’s defining visual characteristic.

Road-going examples typically received bumperettes front and rear, while competition variants dispensed with such equipment for track duty.

Production spanned multiple series with progressive refinements, serving weekend racers who could drive to events, compete successfully, and drive home.
