1962 Studebaker Avanti

The Studebaker Avanti is a luxury coupe built from 1962 through 1963. During its one year long production, the Avanti was marketed as ‘America’s only 4-passenger high-performance personal car’ and was described as one of the more significant milestones of the postwar industry. During the development of the car, it was designed on a modified Studebaker Lark Daytona convertible chassis. The initial scale clay model was designed by Raymond Loewy and his team, and it was presented in 2 and 4-seat variants. Designers felt that the car should be made into 4-seat coupe so they finished off the design as a 4-seater featuring grille-less nose, long front-end, and a wasp-waisted rear end. Th Avanti offered luxury, comfort and safety and the power of 240bhp produced by 4.7-litre V8. The body designed by Raymond Loewy was made out the fiberglass as it was expensive and challenging to build the shell in steel. Studebaker planned to sell 20,000 Avantis but could only build 1,200 examples in the first year, and around 4,600 a year later.
