In 1942, a fire broke out at the Coffey family’s home in Malden, London. It was nighttime. The flames spread fast. Smoke filled the downstairs rooms.
Jim ran upstairs.
He woke Mr. and Mrs. Coffey. They got out. All three of them survived because an elderly cat refused to stay quiet.
That year, Jim became the first cat ever to receive the Blue Cross Medal for heroic actions. The award had been given to animals since 1940, starting with a dog named La Cloche who saved a marine from drowning after a torpedo attack. But Jim was the first of his kind.
The Blue Cross charity was founded in London in 1897 to help working horses. By World War II, it had begun honoring animals who showed extraordinary bravery or loyalty. Jim’s medal recognized something simple but profound: he knew his people were in danger, and he acted.
Nineteen is ancient for a cat. He could have been deaf, slow, confused by the smoke. He wasn’t. He climbed the stairs and made sure his family woke up.
The fire happened during the war. London was being bombed. Families were losing homes, pets, each other. In the middle of all that chaos, one old cat made a choice that mattered.
If you’ve ever loved a cat, you know they notice everything. Where you are. When you’re home. If something’s wrong.
Jim noticed the fire. And he didn’t wait.
