1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Sports Phaeton
Distinguished by its imposing presence and handcrafted exclusivity, this luxury automobile represented a significant advancement over its Silver Ghost predecessor. Available with custom coachwork from renowned builders like Brewster or Murphy, each example reflected the owner’s personal taste through bespoke body designs ranging from sport phaetons to formal limousines.
The chassis featured a 468-cubic-inch straight-six engine producing 95 horsepower through pushrod-operated overhead valves (a major improvement from the Silver Ghost’s side-valve configuration). Four-wheel servo-assisted brakes provided stopping power, while semi-elliptical front springs and cantilever rear suspension delivered the characteristic Rolls-Royce ride quality.
Production ran from 1925 to 1931, with 3,512 examples built across factories in Derby, England, and Springfield, Massachusetts. American models differed slightly with three-speed transmissions versus the four-speed units in British versions. The Phantom I established the foundation for future Rolls-Royce luxury standards before yielding to the Phantom II in 1929.
