1968 Chevrolet Impala SS 427 Convertible
Full-size muscle cars faced tough competition from their smaller counterparts by 1968, making the SS 427 Convertible one of Chevrolet’s rarest performance machines. Only 1,778 Impala SS 427s were produced that year, with approximately 175 configured as convertibles.
The SS 427 package distinguished itself with a distinctive power bulge hood and special badging (no “Impala” script appeared anywhere on the car). Instead, “SS 427” identification graced the grille, deck lid, and front fenders, with the numerals highlighted in red. Fifteen-inch Rally wheels completed the aggressive exterior stance.
Two versions of the legendary 427 cubic-inch V8 were available. The standard L36 delivered 385 horsepower with 10.25:1 compression, while the optional L72 produced 425 horsepower at 11:1 compression. Both engines could be paired with either a four-speed manual transmission or a Turbo-Hydramatic automatic.
Interior appointments included bucket seats, vinyl upholstery, and a console-mounted shifter. Power steering and power brakes came standard, along with a power-operated convertible top.
