One day, Soul suffered a serious injury in an accident. Heart’s devotion became impossible to ignore. When rescuers arrived, Heart refused to leave his side, alerting everyone around her with protective barks.

She wasn’t aggressive; she was determined to make sure that anyone approaching knew this was her friend, and he needed her.

Standing Guard Through the Hardest Moment

Donna Lochmann, a lifesaver with Stray Rescue of St. Louis, happened to witness the scene on her way to the shelter. Without hesitation, she jumped in to help.

Heart was secured safely in the front seat while Soul, carefully wrapped in a blanket, was lifted into the back of the vehicle.

Yet through the entire ride, Heart’s gaze never wavered from her injured companion. She stayed vigilant, silent but attentive, refusing to let him out of her sight.

At the shelter, Heart continued to watch over Soul. When the veterinary team discovered that his injuries were more severe than initially expected, it became clear that there was little they could do.

Heart was allowed to stay by Soul’s side during his final moments, resting her head gently on him as if to say goodbye.

For the staff who witnessed it, the scene was heartbreaking—this small dog’s love for her friend was pure and unwavering, and it left a mark on everyone present.

Carrying Love Forward

Even after Soul passed, Heart’s connection to him didn’t end. The shelter team knew she would need extra care to navigate her grief.

She was bathed, given a quiet space to rest, and allowed time to heal emotionally. But the staff also found a way to make sure Soul’s presence would always remain with her.

A small pendant containing some of Soul’s ashes, along with a tiny golden wing symbolizing his spirit, was attached to Heart’s collar. Now, wherever Heart goes, a piece of Soul goes with her.

Heart didn’t spend long in the shelter before moving to a foster home, where she began to experience the love and security she had been missing.

Her foster family showered her with attention, and while the staff missed her daily presence, they were comforted knowing she was finally safe and cherished.

Plans are in place to bring the rest of Soul’s ashes to her forever home, along with a pawprint, so that his memory will continue to be a part of her life.

Though Heart’s search for a permanent home continues, she carries the love of her best friend wherever she goes.
