This bird dries its wings because they’re not fully waterproof.

In coastal waters, rivers, and lakes across much of the world, the Great Cormorant dives deep beneath the surface in pursuit of fish. Unlike many waterbirds, its feathers allow some water in, reducing buoyancy and helping it swim more efficiently underwater. After hunting, it often perches with wings spread wide, letting them dry in the open air. What makes it extraordinary is this trade-off — sacrificing waterproofing for better diving ability. A dark silhouette against sky and water, yet a master of the underwater hunt.
