1963 Morgan 4/4 Series IV

Hand-built character defined this traditional British roadster during its brief but meaningful production run. The Series IV represented a significant performance leap from its predecessor, featuring an updated 1340cc (82-cubic-inch) Ford Classic 109E engine that produced 62 horsepower compared to the Series III’s 39 horsepower. More importantly, it became the first 4/4 model to receive 11-inch Girling front disc brakes as standard equipment.

The familiar Morgan silhouette remained unchanged, featuring the classic sloping grille, minimal weather protection, and ash wood frame construction that had defined the marque since the 1930s. Morgan’s signature sliding pillar front suspension (dating back to 1910) paired with rack-and-pinion steering for more precise handling.

Under the hood sat the Ford Classic 109E overhead-valve four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Performance improved notably, with 0-60 mph acceleration in approximately 17 seconds and a top speed of about 85 mph.

Production was extremely limited, with only 114 examples built between October 1961 and March 1963. The Series IV was quickly superseded by the Series V in February 1963, which featured the larger Ford Cortina 116E engine, making these transitional models particularly scarce today.
