1968 Holden HK Premier

Australia’s automotive landscape changed significantly in 1968 when the HK range progressively replaced the Holden HR series, which had been in production since 1966. This marked the first time Holden offered V8 engine availability in its mainstream lineup, representing a major shift from the company’s traditional six-cylinder approach.

The Premier nameplate was retained for the top-of-the-line model, which now featured four headlights and a unique roofline to further differentiate it from its lesser siblings. The Premier sat at the luxury end of the initial HK lineup, available in both four-door sedan and five-door station wagon configurations that Holden marketed as “station sedans.”

HK models were both larger and heavier than their predecessors and offered multiple powertrain options, ranging from economical 2.6-liter (161 cu in) and 3.0-liter (186 cu in) six-cylinder engines to performance-oriented 5.0-liter (307 cu in) Chevrolet V8s. This specific example was upgraded to a 5.8-liter Chevy V8 during its restoration.

The HK remained in production from 1968 into 1969 and was the best-selling Australian car of the time, with almost 200,000 units produced in total.
