He dragged his legs across busy streets, and she made sure nothing would hurt him.
Echo was a stray cat in South Korea who suddenly lost the ability to use his hind legs. No one knew what happened. One day he was fine. The next, he was limping across roads, struggling to reach food that strangers left out.
He wasn’t alone.
A fluffy cat the locals called Sikbbang started showing up with him. She wasn’t just following. She was guarding.
When another cat tried to eat Echo’s food, Sikbbang stepped in. She headbutted Echo gently first, like checking in. Then she walked straight up to the other cat and warned it off. After the threat was gone, she walked Echo across the street, staying by his side the whole time.
People in the neighborhood noticed they were always together. If one disappeared, the other went looking. Echo couldn’t defend himself anymore, and Sikbbang seemed to know that.
A kind woman who worked in a nearby building started feeding them. She named Echo after the building and Sikbbang because of her fluffy coat. She even managed to wrap bandages around Echo’s injured leg once, but after that, he wouldn’t let her touch it again.
The woman wanted to help, but rescuing two feral cats who relied on each other seemed impossible. Then an animal rescue team stepped in with a trap.
They used Echo to call Sikbbang. She heard him cry and ran to him without hesitation. That’s how deep the bond was.
At the vet, they learned Echo’s leg nerves were completely dead. Sepsis or necrosis could set in. The only option was amputation.
The surgery went well. When Echo woke up, still groggy and in pain, Sikbbang was brought to see him. The woman who saved them said it looked like Sikbbang was telling him he’d done well.
The woman adopted them both. Echo and Sikbbang now live together, safe indoors, no more dangerous streets.
Sometimes animals do what we struggle to. They show up. They stay. They protect without asking for anything back.
