1953 Buick Skylark Convertible
Commemorating Buick’s golden anniversary, this exclusive convertible represented the pinnacle of American luxury automotive engineering. Only 1,690 examples were produced, making it the most successful of three limited-edition GM specialty convertibles introduced alongside the Oldsmobile Fiesta and Cadillac Eldorado.
Extensive handcrafted construction included unique door stampings cut and rewelded to create the distinctive “sweepspear” door dip, along with generous lead filler work throughout the body.
The distinctive Kelsey-Hayes 40-spoke chrome wire wheels are considered among the most beautiful ever fitted to a production automobile.
Built on the Roadmaster convertible chassis, the Skylark featured Buick’s first modern 322-cubic-inch “Fireball” V8 engine producing 188 horsepower, paired with a Dynaflow automatic transmission. It also introduced Buick’s first 12-volt electrical system.
Priced at $5,000 (more than 50% above the standard Roadmaster convertible), the Skylark included virtually every available luxury feature as standard equipment, setting new benchmarks for American automotive opulence.
