1968 Ferrari Dino 206 GT
Ferrari’s first mid-engine road car broke new ground when it debuted as a separate Dino brand rather than wearing the prancing horse badge. The Italian carmaker needed to build 500 engines to qualify for Formula 2, and this resulted in a more affordable sports car that cost about half the price of a Ferrari Daytona.
Pininfarina’s design team created flowing bodywork with soft edges and curving lines, built entirely from aluminum by Scaglietti. The distinctive chrome fuel filler cap above the left rear fender distinguishes the 206 GT from its later 246 GT sibling.
Under the rear deck sits a transverse-mounted 2.0-liter V6 engine producing 178 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. Three Weber carburetors feed the all-aluminum, dual-overhead-cam powerplant.
The 206 GT featured Ferrari’s first use of rack-and-pinion steering in a road car. Performance figures include a 146 mph top speed and 0-60 mph acceleration in about 7 seconds.
Curb weight was approximately 2,050 lbs (930 kg). Only 152 examples were produced between 1968 and 1969, all in left-hand drive configuration.
