1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster
Lightweight sporting coachwork found an unlikely application on the American-built Springfield Silver Ghost through Merrimac’s Piccadilly Roadster. The Massachusetts bodymaker produced approximately 105 examples for the Silver Ghost, with relatively few fitted to new chassis at the factory. This scarcity of original-coachwork Piccadillys has made them especially desirable among collectors.
The Piccadilly represented a departure from typical Silver Ghost practice, emphasizing reduced weight and sporting character over the formal body styles more commonly associated with the model. Its open two-seat configuration offered minimal weather protection, standing in sharp contrast to the enclosed limousines and sedans that dominated Silver Ghost production.
Springfield-built chassis combined British engineering standards with American craftsmanship, creating Rolls-Royce automobiles tailored specifically for the U.S. market. The Piccadilly’s lighter construction subtly altered driving dynamics while preserving the marque’s hallmark refinement, smoothness, and durability.
