1958 Porsche 356 A 1600 ‘Sunroof’ Coupe (by Reutter)
Representing a pivotal step in sports car evolution, the 1958 Porsche 356 A 1600 ‘Sunroof’ Coupe established the fundamental design philosophy that continues to define Porsche today. Introduced in 1955, the 356 A featured the rear-engine configuration and distinctive silhouette that would become legendary.
The air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-four engine produced 59 horsepower at 4,500 rpm, while the Super version delivered 75 horsepower for enhanced performance. The 356 A was available with several four-cylinder engines, including 1300cc, 1600cc, and the high-performance 1500cc Carrera four-cam.
Built on Porsche’s competition-proven platform, these cars weighed approximately 1,870 pounds and achieved top speeds near 99 mph. Of the 76,000 total 356s produced, it’s estimated that roughly half survive today.
The factory sunroof option added open-air driving pleasure while maintaining the coupe’s structural integrity, making these models particularly desirable among collectors and enthusiasts.
