1961 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible

Fighter jet-inspired design cues and aggressive styling defined Oldsmobile’s entry into the personal luxury convertible market in 1961. The Starfire featured dramatic lines and aeronautical themes that reflected America’s fascination with aviation technology, directly challenging Ford’s Thunderbird dominance.

Built on a 123-inch wheelbase shared with the Super 88 series, the convertible offered distinctive bodywork with sharp creases and angular details. Chrome trim, unique wheel covers, and available two-tone paint schemes emphasized the car’s upscale positioning as Oldsmobile’s most expensive model for the year.

Power came from the company’s 394 cubic inch Rocket V-8 engine producing 330 horsepower, providing impressive acceleration for the period. Factory options included air conditioning (a costly $378 upgrade), power steering, power brakes, power windows, and the innovative Wonderbar radio with dual antennas.

Limited production numbers and extensive standard equipment made the Starfire convertible a premium offering that combined performance with luxury appointments in a distinctly American package.
