1968 Chevrolet Yenko Super Camaro 427/450
Don Yenko’s ingenious approach circumvented GM’s corporate ban on installing engines larger than 400 cubic inches in the Camaro. By ordering SS Camaros equipped with the L78 396/375 hp engine and then swapping in the L72 427 cubic inch big-block at his Canonsburg, Pennsylvania dealership, Yenko created one of the most coveted muscle cars ever produced.
Only about 64 examples emerged from this exclusive 1968 program, with this particular car representing one of just two finished in rare Grotto Blue paint. Yenko’s conversions retained the Camaro’s clean exterior lines while housing serious performance hardware underneath.
The L72 427 cubic inch big-block V8 was officially rated at 425 horsepower, though Yenko advertised it at 450, paired with an M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission designed to handle the substantial torque output. This powertrain combination delivered acceleration that few production cars could match in 1968.
With only about 64 built in 1968 compared to more than 1,000 factory COPO Camaros produced in 1969, the ’68 Yenko Super Camaro remains one of the rarest and most desirable muscle cars of its era.
