This bird can weigh as much as a small turkey, yet it moves silently through the rainforest.
In the dense tropical forests of Central and South America, the Great Curassow walks carefully across the forest floor, its curled crest bobbing gently above glossy black feathers. Males appear bold and dark with bright yellow bills, while females can wear rich patterns of brown, chestnut, or barred plumage.
It feeds on fallen fruits, seeds, insects, and small animals, acting as an important seed disperser in the rainforest. By carrying large seeds across the jungle floor, it helps regenerate trees that many smaller birds cannot spread.
A powerful presence beneath the canopy, yet a quiet gardener of the rainforest.
