This bird spends most of its life running silently across the forest floor instead of flying through the trees.
In the dry spiny forests of Madagascar, the Long-tailed Ground-roller moves cautiously through leaf litter and tangled undergrowth, its long legs and extended tail perfectly suited for life on the ground. Its earthy plumage blends almost seamlessly into the dusty forest, making it difficult to spot even from a few steps away.
It feeds on insects, small reptiles, and other tiny creatures hidden beneath fallen leaves, helping keep the fragile forest ecosystem in balance. Unlike many colorful tropical birds, it relies more on stealth and patience than bright displays or loud songs.
A secretive shadow of Madagascar’s forests, yet a quiet guardian of the island floor.
