1974 Jaguar XJ12L (LWB) 5.3 Series 2

The luxury sedan segment experienced intense competition during the early 1970s, with manufacturers vying for supremacy in this profitable market niche. The long-wheelbase XJ12L represented the ultimate expression of Jaguar’s flagship sedan, combining the refined Series 2 improvements with the company’s remarkable 5.3-liter V12 engine.

The Series 2 design featured a raised front bumper and a more shallow grille compared to its predecessor, while the extended wheelbase (113 inches) provided additional rear passenger space. Interior appointments were updated, with improved ventilation systems and luxury fittings that justified the car’s premium positioning.

At the heart of this grand saloon was Jaguar’s sophisticated V12 powerplant, delivering exceptionally smooth power (a signature characteristic of the engine). In U.S. specification, the 5.3-liter V12 produced 244 horsepower and 301 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. European models were rated at 285 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque, offering even better performance.

The combination of this advanced engine with the long-wheelbase chassis created a driving experience that was both remarkably quick and whisper-quiet, with 0-60 mph achieved in under 8 seconds and a top speed near 140 mph for European models (U.S. versions were slightly lower due to emissions equipment).

The XJ12L earned widespread acclaim from automotive journalists, with Jaguar even publishing a 21-page booklet titled “Praise Indeed” containing nearly 100 positive press reviews. This model was frequently referred to as the “Best Car in the World,” cementing its reputation as the pinnacle of 1970s luxury motoring.
