1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Coupé
Italian design house Ghia’s futuristic concept car vision became Detroit reality when Mercury transformed the striking XM-Turnpike Cruiser show car into production form for 1957. The production model retained many of the concept’s most dramatic features, including the wraparound “Skylight” dual-curve windshield and the distinctive canopy-style roof that overhung the rear window.
Innovative engineering touches included roof-level air intakes and the power-operated retractable “Breezeway” rear window, which allowed passengers to enjoy fresh air circulation without lowering the side glass. The extensive wraparound glass treatment created an airy, modern cabin environment that emphasized the car’s forward-thinking design philosophy.
Mercury’s 368 cubic inch V8 delivered 290 horsepower, paired with a three-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. The optional “keyboard control” push-button gear selector on the dashboard embodied the height of 1950s automotive gadgetry and convenience.
Offered as a hardtop coupé, hardtop sedan, and convertible (including the Indy 500 Pace Car convertible) for both 1957 and 1958, the Turnpike Cruiser exemplified American automotive optimism and space-age styling during the height of the tailfin era.
