This bird grows two impossibly long head plumes that can be longer than its entire body.

Deep in the cloud forests of New Guinea, the King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise moves through the canopy like a creature from another world. The male’s most extraordinary feature is a pair of slender, ribbon-like head wires tipped with shimmering blue flags that bounce and wave independently above his head.

During courtship, he raises and flicks these bizarre ornaments in elaborate displays to attract females, turning the forest into a stage of motion and color. Despite such dramatic appearance, it spends much of its time quietly feeding on fruits and insects high in the treetops.

A surreal performer of the mountain canopy, yet one of evolution’s most astonishing masterpieces.
