1966 Volvo P1800S
Swedish elegance meets Italian styling in this distinctive sports coupe that gained international fame through Roger Moore’s portrayal of Simon Templar in The Saint television series.
The sleek bodywork, penned by Pelle Petterson while working under Pietro Frua, features flowing lines, a distinctive front grille, and subtle rear fins that set it apart from other European sports cars of the era.
By 1963, production had moved from Jensen Motors in Britain to Volvo’s Lundby plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, and by 1966 the model carried the “S” designation (for Sverige). The car featured front disc brakes and rear drums, along with a well-appointed interior sporting genuine leather seats and classic instrumentation.
Under the hood sat Volvo’s reliable B18 four-cylinder engine displacing 1.8 liters (109 cubic inches), producing 115 horsepower through twin carburetors. This powerplant delivered a top speed of about 109 mph while maintaining the durability Volvo was known for (one owner famously drove his P1800S over 3 million miles).
Originally priced at around $3,900 in the U.S., the P1800S represented Volvo’s successful attempt to create an image-building sports car that proved both stylish and dependable.
