This bird can transform from plain brown to brilliant red and black in just a few months.
Across the grasslands and open woodlands of Australia, the Red-backed Fairywren darts through shrubs with restless energy. For much of the year, males may look surprisingly dull, blending in with females in soft brown plumage. But during breeding season, they undergo a dramatic transformation, suddenly glowing with jet-black feathers and a vivid scarlet back.
They feed on insects and tiny invertebrates, constantly hopping through grasses and low branches while working together in small social groups. Despite their tiny size, these birds are bold, noisy, and full of personality.
A small bird with a secret second identity, yet one of Australia’s brightest flashes of color.
