1958 Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider
Elegant curves and understated Italian styling defined this transitional roadster that bridged Alfa Romeo’s pre-war design heritage with modern engineering. The Spider and Sprint versions were designed and bodied by independent coachbuilders, with Touring handling the Spider, creating a more refined aesthetic than the company’s previous offerings.
Built on a 98-inch wheelbase with overall dimensions of 185.6 inches long and 65.4 inches wide, the Spider featured distinct hood scoops that varied between markets (European versions had separated scoops while American cars combined them with chrome trim).
The 1,975cc twin-cam inline-four engine produced 115 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque, fed by twin Solex side-draft carburetors and mated to a five-speed manual transmission with full synchromesh. Top speed was about 110 mph, with a curb weight of 2,557 pounds (1,160 kg).
Total production reached 3,443 units between 1958 and 1962, making it a relatively rare Italian roadster. Despite being expensive but not particularly fast, the Spider outsold the sedan version before being replaced by the larger-engined 2600 series.
