This duck often nests far away from water, sometimes high inside hollow trees.
Across the wetlands, grasslands, and open lakes of Australia, the Australian Shelduck moves with bold contrast โ dark plumage paired with a crisp white collar that stands out across the landscape. Pairs are often seen together, grazing along shorelines or resting near quiet water.
Unlike many ducks that build nests close to the ground, this species frequently chooses tree hollows, rocky crevices, or hidden burrows to raise its young safely away from predators. Once the ducklings hatch, they must make a dramatic journey back to the water below.
A strong flier of open country, yet a surprisingly adventurous parent of the wetlands.
