1969 Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior
Distinctive “stepnose” styling made this Bertone-designed coupe instantly recognizable among Italian sports cars, earning its nickname from the raised front hood edge that created a step profile.
Young Giorgetto Giugiaro penned the elegant lines for Bertone, creating what many consider one of the most beautiful affordable 2+2 designs ever produced. The scalino (Italian for “step”) body style represented the early, most coveted series among Alfa Romeo enthusiasts.
Originally powered by a lively 1,290cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine producing 89 horsepower, this particular example benefits from a replacement 1,750cc unit with twin carburetors for upgraded performance.
The lightweight construction tipped the scales at just 2,094 pounds (950 kg) in original form, contributing to the car’s nimble handling characteristics that could lift the inside front wheel during spirited cornering.
Aimed at younger Alfisti, the GT 1300 Junior became the best-selling model in the entire Giulia GT lineup. A five-speed manual transmission delivered power to the rear wheels through a smooth-shifting gearbox that complemented the car’s sporting nature.
Production of the beloved stepnose design concluded in 1970, after which Alfa Romeo introduced the smooth-nose body style.
