1931 Cadillac V-12 Five-Passenger Sedan

Cadillac introduced its V-12 engine for 1931 as a companion to the flagship V-16, offering a more attainable multi-cylinder option that undercut the Sixteen by about $2,000 to $2,500.

The 45-degree V-12 displaced 368 cubic inches and produced 135 horsepower, only 30 less than its larger sibling. Hydraulic valve silencers contributed to exceptionally smooth and quiet operation, a hallmark shared with the V-16. Many enthusiasts consider the V-12 the more balanced choice, providing nearly identical refinement and performance at a significantly lower cost.

The V-12’s visual similarity to the V-16 made it an appealing alternative for buyers seeking prestige without excessive ostentation during the Depression. Historian Walter McCall noted that V-12 sales came partly at the expense of the Sixteen, whose numbers declined sharply after the V-12’s debut in September 1930. Both engines shared the same stroke, though the V-12 used a slightly larger bore.

This five-passenger sedan was completed in early 1931 after being ordered through Don Lee, Inc., Cadillac’s prestigious Los Angeles distributor, with delivery specified no later than April 1. Original equipment included six wire wheels with dual fender-mounted spares and the desirable Goddess radiator ornament. The 140-inch wheelbase provided generous interior space and a smooth ride.

A professional restoration completed in 1995 earned Best of Show honors at the Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance, followed by a perfect 100-point score and Senior Badge at the 1996 CCCA Pacific Northwest Grand Classic. The car later placed second in the Closed Classic class at Pebble Beach in 1999.
