1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Convertible
Chevrolet transformed its intermediate muscle car lineup in 1966 by making the SS 396 a distinct model rather than an option package, with the convertible representing the premium expression of this performance-focused approach. The drop-top featured distinctive SS badging, simulated hood air intakes, and optional racing stripes that emphasized its sporting intentions.
Three 396 cubic inch big-block V8 engines powered the SS lineup: the 325-horsepower L35, the 360-horsepower L34, and the top-performing 375-horsepower L78. All could be paired with a three-speed manual transmission, while a four-speed manual and a two-speed Powerglide automatic were also available. This range delivered the kind of straight-line acceleration that defined the muscle car movement.
The SS package included performance-tuned suspension components, wider F70-14 tires, and specific interior appointments that distinguished it from standard Chevelle models. Bucket seats and console-mounted shifters created a driver-focused cockpit environment.
