1966 Shelby 427 S/C Cobra

Racing homologation requirements created an unexpected opportunity when Carroll Shelby found himself with 29 competition chassis that could not receive FIA approval. Rather than waste the investment, Shelby transformed these race-ready platforms into “Semi-Competition” models, creating what many consider the ultimate street-legal Cobra variant.

The 427-cubic-inch side-oiler V8 delivered devastating performance that surpassed many purpose-built racing cars of the period. This massive powerplant sat within flared fenders that accommodated wider racing tires, while side-mounted exhaust pipes provided both performance gains and an unmistakable warning to bystanders.

Competition-derived features included a riveted hood scoop, oil cooler, dual lightweight batteries, and a 42-gallon fuel tank with an external filler. The aggressive bodywork and functional aerodynamic elements made clear this car’s racing intentions despite its street-legal status.

Only 29 Semi-Competition models were completed, making them extraordinarily rare within an already exclusive model line. These cars represented the intersection of Carroll Shelby’s racing ambitions and his ability to create highly desirable road cars from competition components.
