She never felt wanted. Not for thirteen years.
Violet was surrendered again and again. Different owners, same ending. One even poured acid into her eyes, leaving her blind and broken.
By the time Kelly Graffin found her at Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden, Colorado, Violet was 13 years old. She was in stage four renal failure. Most people looking at her chart saw a lost cause.
The Graffins saw something else. They weren’t looking for a kitten. They wanted an older cat who deserved peace at the end. They wanted to give Violet what she’d been denied her entire life: a home that wouldn’t leave her.
The shelter waived all fees. The family brought her home the next day.
They thought they’d have months. Maybe weeks. But with dietary changes, medication, and holistic care, Violet began to gain weight. Her personality emerged. She started to trust.
Two years passed. Not months. Years.
She lived to 15. She spent her final day in the mountains, surrounded by people who chose her when no one else would.
Senior animals don’t always get second chances. Violet got hers late, but she got it fully.
The Graffins now have twin senior cats named Sully and Bones. They’re continuing what Violet taught them: that the oldest pets are often the ones who’ve been waiting the longest.
If you’ve ever wondered whether adopting a senior animal is worth it, this is your answer. The time may be shorter, but the love is just as deep.
Rest easy, Violet. You finally had a family. You finally had peace.
