1962 Maserati 3500 GTI Coupé
Carrozzeria Touring’s Superleggera construction (aluminum panels stretched over a skeleton of small-diameter steel tubes) gives the 3500GTi a body considerably lighter than a conventional steel shell would produce.
The complete car comes in at 3,175 lb (1,440 kg). The GTi’s profile departs from the earlier carbureted GT in specific ways: rectangular front indicators replaced the original round ones, the chrome grille surround was slimmed, and rear quarter-light windows were added to the roofline.
Under the hood, a 3.5-liter DOHC inline-six came from the 350S racing car of 1956. Giulio Alfieri (the designer also responsible for the Tipo 60/61 Birdcage sports-racers) drew the engine as a close relative of the 250F Grand Prix unit.
Lucas mechanical fuel injection replaced the earlier triple Weber carburetors in 1961, bringing output to 235bhp. A ZF five-speed gearbox was available from 1960, and front disc brakes were standard equipment by this point in production.
Introduced at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, the 3500GT ran through 1964 with 2,226 examples produced across all variants. Fuel-injected GTi coupés with standard Touring coachwork account for roughly 500 of that total.
