1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS Sport Coupe
Standing at the absolute apex of America’s muscle car era, this model represented the final flowering of unrestricted horsepower before emissions regulations and insurance concerns fundamentally changed automotive performance.
The 1970 Chevelle received revised sheet metal with “coke bottle” styling, and only three models could be ordered with SS packages: the Malibu Sport Coupe, Malibu Convertible, and El Camino pickup.
Two SS options were available: RPO Z25 with the SS 396 (actually a 402 CI engine) producing 350 horsepower, and RPO Z15 with the new 454 CI big-block offered in two configurations.
The base LS5 454 generated 360 horsepower, while the legendary LS6 option delivered a factory-rated 450 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.
The LS6 featured an 800-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor, aluminum intake manifold, 11.25:1 compression, solid lifters, four-bolt main bearings, and forged internals. Magazine tests recorded quarter-mile times of 13.44 seconds at 108 mph, with some achieving low 13-second passes.
Only 4,475 LS6 engines were produced in 1970, making survivors extremely rare and valuable, with convertible examples commanding over $1 million at auction. This fearsome combination of power and scarcity established the LS6 Chevelle as the undisputed king of American muscle cars.
