1970 Fiat 850 Sport Coupe
Italian design house Bertone gave Fiatβs modest economy car underpinnings a stylish makeover with the 850 Sport Coupe.
Crisp angular lines and a distinctive fastback profile gave this small coupe visual appeal far beyond its mechanical modesty, making it an attractive entry point into European sports car ownership.
The Sport Coupe retained Fiatβs rear-engine layout, with an 843 cc overhead-valve inline four mounted behind the rear axle. This configuration provided good traction in poor weather while allowing for a surprisingly spacious front trunk.
In U.S.-spec form for 1970, the engine produced about 58 horsepower, enough to move the lightweight body with spirit, though performance was modest by American standards.
Interior appointments were simple but functional, with basic instrumentation and seating for four. The rear engine placement allowed for respectable cabin space despite the carβs compact exterior dimensions.
These coupes delivered European styling and nimble handling at prices well below those of contemporary Alfa Romeo or Porsche models, appealing to budget-conscious enthusiasts in the early 1970s.
