1989 Porsche 928 GT ‘Flachbau’

Introduced in February 1989, the 928 GT represented the sportier variant of Porsche’s grand touring lineup, featuring a 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 330 horsepower. Available only with a five-speed manual transmission, it included standard equipment like a limited-slip differential and seven-spoke Club Sport wheels.

The ‘Flachbau’ designation refers to an extremely rare factory modification performed by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (special wishes) department, which was established in 1980 to fulfill unique customer requests. This particular variant featured flatter pop-up headlights similar to the Porsche 944, differing from the standard 928’s circular exposed rising lamps. Additional modifications included wider body skirts and wheel arches to create a visually lower, more aggressive appearance.

The GT could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds, excellent performance for its era. Production of both S4 and GT variants ended in 1991, making way for the final 928 GTS. The Flachbau 928 GT remains one of the rarest Porsche variants ever produced.
