1938 Pierce-Arrow Model 1801 Eight Convertible Coupe

Pierce‑Arrow refused to compromise its reputation for uncompromising luxury during the Great Depression (a decision that ultimately sealed the fate of the Buffalo manufacturer in 1938).

While rivals such as Packard introduced lower‑priced models to sustain sales, Pierce‑Arrow steadfastly maintained its position among the “Three P’s” of American prestige motoring: Packard, Peerless, and Pierce‑Arrow.

The Model 1801 Eight Convertible Coupe was among the final expressions of that legacy. Believed to have been built early in 1938, possibly for auto‑show display, it rode on a 139‑inch wheelbase and was powered by Pierce‑Arrow’s 385 cu in straight‑eight engine producing 150 horsepower.

The engine featured hydraulic valve lifters, a pioneering technology that underscored the marque’s long‑standing engineering sophistication.

Signature fender‑mounted headlights, a Pierce‑Arrow hallmark since 1914, gave the car its instantly recognizable appearance. By May 13, 1938, production ceased after only 18 eight‑cylinder and 22 V‑12 cars were completed.

Just three 1938 eight‑cylinder Pierce‑Arrows are known to survive today, making this Convertible Coupe one of the rarest and most historically significant bookends to the company’s distinguished history.
