1958 Ford F100

Ford’s 1957 restyle transformed the F-Series from a round-fendered postwar design into something that looked current: a full-width cab with integrated front fenders, a clamshell hood (which would define Ford truck design for the next two decades), and a wrap-around windshield within a squared-off “Driverized Cab.”

Two cargo bed options were introduced that year: the conventional Flareside, with separate rear fenders, and the new Styleside, which carried the flush cab sheet metal through to the tail. The Styleside was available in short- and long-wheelbase configurations, the latter with an eight-foot bed.

For 1958, quad headlights were added, the only year of this generation to use them. Engine choices ran from the 223 cu in “Mileage Maker” inline-six (139 hp) to the optional 292 cu in Y-block V8 (186 hp); the larger 332 cu in FE V8 also joined the F-Series lineup that year. Three-speed manual was standard; automatic was optional.

The Styleside body directly undercut the Chevrolet Cameo and Dodge Sweptside, which relied on fiberglass panels and modified station-wagon rear sheetmetal to achieve a similar flush-sided look. The F-Series offered the same clean profile in conventional steel, at conventional truck prices.
