The Surf Scoter is a hardy diving duck that breeds across the northern forests of North America and winters along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Males are instantly recognizable by their bold black plumage and brightly patterned bill, while both sexes dive beneath the waves to feed on mussels, clams, crabs, and other marine invertebrates.
