This bird doesn’t build its nest in a tree—it digs a tunnel into the earth.
The Turquoise-browed Motmot creates its nest by excavating a long tunnel in a dirt bank, cliff, or natural embankment. At the end of the tunnel, the pair forms a simple nesting chamber where they lay their eggs, safely hidden from many predators. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks until they are ready to leave the nest.
A clever architect of the tropical forests, proving that the safest home is sometimes built underground.
