Crowded Shelter Sparks a Quick Decision
After returning home to Des Moines, Iowa, Elaine Buhs stepped out again for a quick grocery trip. While she managed to grab everything on her list—milk, bread, and a few basics—her drive back took a heartfelt detour.
Elaine, a longtime volunteer at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, decided to swing by the shelter. When she saw just how overcrowded it had become, she couldn’t ignore it. Feeling hopeful and energized, she chose to make a difference.
By the time she got back to her car, the front seat was loaded with groceries—but the back seat held something much more special: Buddy, a 10-month-old Great Pyrenees mix in need of a temporary home.
Elaine later posted a video of her unexpected rescue moment on TikTok, through her account @dog_momdsm, where viewers quickly fell in love with Buddy’s story.
“My shelter’s filling up fast with dogs,” Elaine explained in her TikTok caption. “Four shy pups just came in—one was adopted, another went straight into foster care. That left two. I decided to take this sweet, nervous guy home. I’m planning to stay beside him all night and see how he settles in. ❤️❤️❤️”

Elaine dialed her husband for a quick hand, and he came outside expecting to carry grocery bags—not wrangle a giant dog.
