Homeless Pup Scratches Doors Hoping for Love and A Forever Home

In the middle of a rainy week in Southern California, a small white dog was seen walking up to every doorstep in the neighborhood. Her tiny paw would reach out and lightly scratch on each front door — as if she believed someone inside might let her stay.

The dog, a bichon mix, had likely been left behind in a nearby park. As storms rolled through the area, she tried porch after porch looking for help. But no one came. So she sat quietly in the rain, shivering and alone.

A Scared Pup in Need

Suzette Hall, the founder of Logan’s Legacy dog rescue, had also been displaced by the flooding. She knew what it felt like to be without a home — and when she heard about the dog’s desperate search for shelter, she knew she had to act.

“I felt just like her that day,” Hall said. “Lost. Then someone sent me her photo.”

Unexpected Turns

She rushed to the neighborhood and brought along a humane trap, hoping to lure the frightened pup with treats. But the little dog, overwhelmed by fear, wouldn’t go near it.

Instead of giving up, Hall sat down nearby and spoke gently to her. “I told her I didn’t have a home either right now. I just wanted her to feel safe,” Hall said.

To her surprise, the pup slowly crept toward her. Within moments, she allowed Hall to pet her. Carefully and patiently, Hall slipped on a leash and carried her to the car.

Hall took her straight to the vet.

Thankfully, she was in good health — except for the tangled, matted fur covering her small body.

A grooming session was quickly arranged, and as her knots were shaved away, the groomer decided she looked like a Nicole.

“We started calling her Nikki,” Hall said.

The Rescue and New Beginnings

Now safe and cleaned up, Nikki is staying in a loving foster home. She doesn’t bark, loves people, and charms everyone she meets.

Hall rushed her to the vet, where she received a clean bill of health. The only issue was her matted fur, so a last-minute grooming session was arranged.

As the groomer worked through the tangled knots, she thought the dog resembled a “Nicole,” and so Nikki became her new name.

A New Life for Nikki

“She has the gentlest soul,” Hall shared. “She’s just perfect.”

Nikki is still waiting for a forever family, but those who know her believe it won’t be long. Until then, she’s surrounded by love — and no longer has to knock on doors just to feel at home.
