Lonely Husky Who Was Running Out of Time Finally Found His Perfect Family

When Balto first arrived at Austin Animal Center, his left eye had suffered a serious wound, causing him great pain.

He urgently needed special care, so Austin Pets Alive! quickly stepped in to provide him with the help he needed. It was a close call, but they were able to save his eye and begin his journey toward recovery.

Balto’s Emotional Healing Journey

Though his physical injuries healed, Balto’s emotional wounds took more time. After everything he had been through, he developed separation anxiety, making the shelter environment a struggle for him.

“He spent about eight months in the shelter,” said Luis Sanchez, director of public relations and communications at Austin Pets Alive!, in an interview with The Dodo. “He was lovable, energetic, and often overlooked just because he was a husky with separation anxiety.

After a short sleepover stay, he ended up back at the shelter, where he was incredibly stressed and trying to chew out of his kennel. I called my wife and told her I’d probably come home with a dog later that day.”

Sanchez began fostering Balto, hoping to help him relax and bring him closer to finding his forever home. He and his wife took Balto everywhere, from breweries to adoption events, sharing his story on social media. Finally, a family found him — and they even had a new sister waiting for him.

Finding His Forever Family

“A family from New Braunfels emailed saying they wanted a husky that was good with kids,” Sanchez recalled. “A few days later, I drove an hour out of town to meet them, and they fell in love.

It was the sweetest moment when their little daughter grabbed his leash and started giving him a tour of their house, saying, ‘This is my room; this is my parents’ room.’”

Balto immediately felt at ease with his new family, especially with his new little human. The moment they made the adoption official, everything felt perfect.

Now, Balto is thriving in his new home, always by his sister’s side whenever he can. After waiting so long, his happy ending was truly worth it.
