Never judge a book by its cover – sometimes, it leads you straight to a heartwarming surprise. In Nicole and her grandpa’s case, that surprise was Rusty.

This shelter Pitbull was unfairly labeled as aggressive by the staff, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. Unfortunately, Rusty’s true nature was hidden under the weight of stigma – until two kind-hearted souls walked into the shelter.

From the moment he was adopted, Rusty proved to be a good boy… and the best friend of ducklings!

Rusty Wasn’t What They Expected

Nicole’s grandpa had always loved dogs. One day, he decided it was time to adopt one, and he and Nicole visited a local shelter.

It didn’t take long before he set his sights on Rusty, a Pitbull marked as aggressive by the shelter staff. There was something special about this dog that caught his attention, and Rusty soon became the one.

Though Nicole had her doubts, she supported her grandpa’s decision and the three-headed home together. It only took Rusty a few days to show the shelter that their assessment was entirely wrong.

“Everything on their paper was completely wrong. There was not one mean bone in his body. He wanted to be held all the time. He was very sweet and very gentle with my grandpa, too,” Nicole shared with Cuddle Buddies.

Before long, Rusty became the heart and soul of Grandpa’s home. They spent four wonderful years together until it was time for Nicole to step in, as promised.

Since her grandpa could no longer care for Rusty, Nicole decided to adopt him permanently. It was, without a doubt, the best choice she could have made.

Not only was Rusty an incredible companion, but he soon revealed an extraordinary talent that he’d kept hidden – his ability to connect with all kinds of animals!

Rusty, The Duckling Whisperer

Nicole’s neighbor, a certified animal rehabilitator, frequently brought home animals in need of care. Nicole loved seeing these tiny creatures exploring the yard, but there was one unexpected admirer who enjoyed it even more – Rusty.

He was amazing with every animal, including cats, birds, and, most recently, ducklings!

When Nicole’s neighbor asked if she could care for her baby ducklings for a few days, Nicole agreed without hesitation. That’s when Rusty worked his magic!

He didn’t want to be separated from the ducklings for even a second. He followed them everywhere, protected them, and embraced his role as their big brother. It was heartwarming to see this big guy step into such a loving role, especially after being unfairly labeled as aggressive for so long.

Then something even more incredible happened. Instead of him following the ducklings, they began to climb onto him and snuggle up all over his body. For some reason, they mistook him for their momma – and he didn’t mind at all.

“Rusty raised them until they were ready to go back outside. I don’t know if they felt protected or if they just thought he was a big duck, but they seemed to be attached to him,” says Nicole.
