Vet Steps In To Save An Almost Euthanized Puppy Due To A Birth Defect

Vet Rescues Puppy from Euthanasia After Owner's Heartbreaking Request

Seeing a dog in pain, crying because of suffering, is one of the hardest things for true dog lovers to witness.

For veterinarians, this is often their reality—a life dedicated to helping these helpless beings because of the immense love they have for them.

Yet, these compassionate individuals face difficult decisions every day, decisions that can push them to their limits.

One veterinarian found himself in such a situation when an owner arrived with a heartbreaking request.

Despite his extensive experience, it was far from an easy decision. But, in the end, he made the best choice possible.

Heartbreaking Situation

Dr. Oliver Reeve is a co-founder of Onewa Road Veterinary Hospital and an experienced veterinarian with years of practice.

One day, Dr. Reeve was stunned when an owner came to him with his seven-week-old puppy, asking to euthanize him. The puppy, a Golden Doodle named Toby, had a birth defect, which led to the request.

Though Dr. Reeve was shocked, as many of you likely are, he didn’t judge the owner. He understood the difficulty of making such a decision.

“The main point is that the owner sought veterinary care for a puppy that was in pain. It was brave of them to come to the clinic and request euthanasia,” the doctor said. “I’m sure it was a very difficult situation for them, but they took responsibility and sought appropriate care. That is something I respect and it is far, far better than people who just dump unwanted animals.”

Though initially stunned, Dr. Reeve quickly regained his composure and came up with a potential solution.

There Is Another Way

Dr. Reeve chose not to reveal the exact defect Toby had. But after much thought, he realized that he could help fix the issue.

He was confident that he could help this puppy, and he knew his wife wouldn’t mind taking in one more pet, even with the dog, cat, rat, and three rabbits they already had.

So, he offered the owner the option of surrendering Toby to him rather than euthanizing him. There would be no cost, and Toby would continue to live. To Dr. Reeve’s joy, the owner immediately accepted.

“Surrender is not often an option, many times vet clinic staff are tapped out with the number of animals they’ve already adopted, but that day was Toby’s lucky day,” Dr. Reeve concluded happily.

That very evening, Toby arrived at his new home, where he was warmly welcomed. Shortly after, he underwent two successful surgeries.

“The definitive surgery will have to wait until he’s older and more grown,” Dr. Reeve said, his voice full of optimism.

His Future Is Finally Bright

In just a few days, Toby transformed from a puppy doomed for euthanasia into a joyful pup with a bright future, all thanks to a man who values every life – Dr. Oliver Reeve.

Dr. Reeve had big plans for his new companion, assigning Toby the role of “a vet’s dog,” meaning Toby would be doted on and loved by the entire clinic staff.

At home, Dr. Reeve hoped to teach Toby not to chase rabbits. Meanwhile, he introduced him to his other dog, Danni, and posted about their new friendship on his X account @FeltonR. Watching them together was pure joy.

In the end, Dr. Reeve was overjoyed with how everything turned out for this dog, knowing that his decision played a crucial role in Toby’s bright new future.

Though it’s Dr. Reeve’s job to make the best decisions for animals in need, this one turned out to be the most special of all.
