Fostering a Hero: Rescue Dog Saves Family Of Five From Boat Fire

A brave shelter dog visiting a family in Portsmouth, Virginia, has become a local hero after saving them from a terrible fire.

This incredible pup, who was just spending some time with the family, sensed danger and alerted them, preventing a disaster.

The love and loyalty shown by this furry friend remind us all of the special bond between humans and animals and how they can step up when we need them the most.

A Day with Sweet Moose

Chris Cushna and Sheila Jane were glad to discover a program called “Paws Around Portsmouth,” which lets families spend a day with a shelter dog from the Portsmouth Humane Society.

They thought it would be a great experience for their children, Anya and Logan, and their granddaughter, Luna.

After some thought, they chose a Great Pyrenees named Moose.

The family treated Moose to a bath, pup cups, and boneless chicken, making her day full of joy. When evening came, they decided to keep her overnight, happy to spend more time with their new friend.

The next day, they took her to the farmers market, where Chris’s band performed. Moose quickly became a town favorite, and by day’s end, a resident named Emma decided to adopt her, giving Moose a chance at a forever home.

The Early Morning Alarm

Little did anyone know, Moose was about to become a town hero.

Around 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, August 6, while the family was sleeping on their houseboat, Moose woke up to the smell of smoke from a neighboring boat.

Acting quickly, she alerted Cushna and Janes, allowing them to wake the rest of the family in time to evacuate before the fire spread.

A Narrow Escape

The fire on the adjacent boat spread rapidly, leaving the family with only a few critical minutes to escape.

Firefighters and coastguards arrived promptly to control the flames and secure other boats in the marina.

Thankfully, due to Moose’s actions, all family members safely escaped without injuries.

Although the family escaped unharmed, most of their belongings were destroyed in the blaze.

To help them recover, a GoFundMe titled “Hero Dog Saves Portsmouth Family” has already raised over $8,000, inching closer to its $10,000 goal. Chris and Sheila are deeply grateful for Moose, who saved their lives when every second counted.

A Superhero in the Community

Moose’s bravery hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Now living with her new owner, Emma, Moose remains a cherished part of the Portsmouth community.

Sheila shared, “Her new owner is a regular at the farmers’ market, so I know she’ll stop by. Moose is like a little superhero in our town right now.”
