1963 Ford XL Falcon Ute
Australian Ford designers adapted Detroit’s compact Falcon platform into a uniquely Antipodean configuration with the utility vehicle body style.
The “ute” (Australian terminology for a car-based pickup combining a passenger car front section with an integrated cargo bed) entered XL-series production in August 1962 as part of Ford Australia’s second-generation Falcon lineup. This model was never sold in the United States.
Ford Australia offered XL Falcons with either a 144 cubic inch inline-six producing 90 horsepower or an optional 170 cubic inch version generating 101 horsepower. A three-speed manual transmission was standard, with a two-speed Fordomatic automatic available as an option.
Production totaled 75,765 units across all XL Falcon body styles before the XM series replaced it in February 1964.
This modified example features a transplanted Ford 302 cubic inch small-block V8 breathing through Holley carburetors, replacing the original inline-six. Power is transmitted through a C4 three-speed automatic and a Ford 9-inch rear differential.
The discreet gray finish preserves 1960s styling cues including the chrome grille, rocket-inspired taillights, and Ford B-pillar badging.
